The portable console could natively play PS5 games without an active Wi-Fi connection.
Sony is currently developing a new handheld gaming console that enables users to play PlayStation 5 games anywhere. According to Bloomberg, Sony is developing a console to compete with Nintendo and Microsoft in the portable gaming market. However, the console is likely “years away from launch” if Sony decides to release it at all.
Nintendo is the king of handheld gaming, and they’re about to release a new Switch that’s even better than the last one expected to arrive next year. Microsoft is also developing its own handheld Xbox prototype, though Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has recently cautioned that the device is “a few years out.” The handheld gaming category has also benefitted from a PC-platform expansion in recent years thanks to new players like Valve’s Steam Deck and the ROG Ally lineup from Asus.
Sony is determined not to be left behind in the gaming world. They’re working on a new device called the PlayStation Portal, which is an eight-inch gaming device that can stream PS5 games from the cloud. But guess what? It was originally supposed to be a standalone device, not just a way to stream games. This new device will let you play games without an internet connection, which could help Sony reach a wider audience and make their games more accessible to everyone.
Sony isn’t entirely new to this territory, having previously released portable gaming consoles such as the PS Vita and PlayStation Portable, which have since been discontinued.
